Cyborg Visitor Centre

The topic for DSS 6 is the design of the Cyborg Visitor Center. According to the narratives, the Tur Abdin region, located right in the center of Midyat, is an important place with a cultural heritage value considered sacred for the Assyrians. The villages of Anıtlı and İzbırak in this region have church and monastery structures dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries, as well as abandoned or potentially abandoned civilian architectural examples due to migration.

Efforts to increase the tourism potential of the region often focus on consumption-oriented approaches and put pressure on the cultural heritage value with analyses that have great uncertainty about continuity. However, they also reveal the demands of different visitor profiles. In this workshop, visitor profiles should be stretched to the extreme, enriched with futuristic ideas such as humanized machines or mechanized human models, which can be termed as cyborgs. This futurism should also aim at creating virtual spaces and should be integrated with the historical context provided by the setting.

INDUSTRIAL TRANSFORMATION: VILLAGE HETEROTOPIA

by Merve Sule Yörük

“Cybernetic organisms are needed when natural tissue is damaged for various reasons. In order for the damaged tissue to regain its function, various parts are brought together to form a new mechanism. Anıtlı village is an organic system whose texture has been damaged at multiple points. The fabric of the village is repaired with parts created from industrial building elements. The heterotopia created with the new texture functions the area for the designed visitor center. At the same time, it creates new connections between organic and artificial components for the users, waiting to be discovered."

spatial fictioning

Exploring alternative realities through speculative 3D modelling of building elements involves the creation of virtual environments that explore imaginative and hypothetical scenarios, pushing the boundaries of conventional design constraints. By employing speculative narratives and futuristic concepts, students challenge preconceived notions of space and architecture, allowing for the communication of radical ideas and the exploration of innovative spatial solutions.
